Internal Suffering (Colombia (Pereira) )

Internal Suffering - Awakening of the Rebel [2006] (Technical Brutal Death Metal)
Lable : Unique Leader Records

Musically the first thing that stands out about ‘Awakening of the Rebel' is the drumming. Looking at the calm booklet picture of Fabio “Dr. Grinder” Ramirez is like viewing a gigantic ocean swell before it turns into a humongous crushing white capped wave. Ramirez employs a drum sound that is similar to what Derek Roddy has done with Hate Eternal. The notable difference is that everything is more precise, faster, passionate, crazy, layered, unrelenting, and downright amazing. Unreal impressive is the blazing gravity blasting on this album. Fuck, Hellhammer, and Flo Mounier cause Ramirez is almost inhuman in every dimension discernable to the human ears for what a drummer can do sitting behind a kit. Goddamn, I am surprised he doesn't clamp a stick between his ass cheeks and slap another snare. Drumming aside, the guitar riffing of Makoto Mizoguchi on this album is unique. Melodies cascade, brief licks rip, and harmonies collide in a splendid cacophony backed by accuracy and sheer homicidal anger. Andres Garcia on bass provides an ogre of rhythmic background that only a professional could muster to keep up with Internal Suffering' rapid tempo changes, and chaotic complexity. Vocally Fabio Marin spews fabulous blasphemy in gruesome pulsations of deeply spiteful exuberance. When slammed together into a band called Internal Suffering, listeners are going to get an unrepentant barrage of technical mortars blowing asunder every centimeter of their foxholes.
As written above there are some obvious contrasts to the Internal Suffering sound. Most notable is the early Kataklysm era lyric structure and musical speed shuffled into a deck of cards whose faces are Centurian, Morbid Angel, Krisiun, and Hate Eternal. Yet, almost none of that matters, for Internal Suffering encompass a sound that is uniquely their own. They do this with rapid riffs that will change 3 times in 5 seconds, dive-bomber harmonies, and sphincter gapping double kick, ball crushing gravity blasts, bulls intestine thick bass rhythms, and a vocalist who absolutely hates every one of us. Hell, even when they do slow things down a tad there is no respite, for the riffs are monumental and pulverizing in a way that makes me think of how insane it must have felt to be within close proximity to the World Trade Towers as they fell. Therefore, even if Internal Suffering sounded a bit like the fucking Beatles they would still be a unique black cavity rotting yer deeply crooked wisdom tooth. The production is beautifully balanced bring out all the talents of the musicians evenly, which adds to the powerful sound of ‘Awakening of the Rebel'. Overall Internal Suffering have succeeded profoundly in creating an album of tightly woven lunacy with enough elements be it technicality, broootality, or melody to appease virtually any Metal fan. Gratifying too is that Internal Suffering are a wonderful respite from some of the slamming Death Metal that has become popular. It is worth mentioning that Andres Usma formerly of Pustulated is now a full time member. This means that the band can only get better. So fond reader stop wasting time, get into the fight and score ‘Awakening of the Rebel' otherwise you are sure to get a not too happy visit from the vein laden ball sack known as Internal Suffering.

Origin (United States of America (Topeka, Kansas) )

Origin - Antithesis [2008] (Technical Brutal Death Metal)
Lable : Relapse Records

Have you ever ordered a cheeseburger, let's say..at Burger King... and right when you were adding the jalapeños (you know? after the first bite) you realize the cheeseburger is actually a regular burger? yes! without cheese!! Obviously you already had a little bite, so you can't return it of course, you then take a seat and while being a little depressed you say, - "well, it's not so bad I guess, many people don't like cheese in the first place...those lactose intolerant guys right? meh... I wanted a cheeseburger!...oh well, what can I do, I'll try to enjoy this or something" you then finish your meal and leave the place unhappy but with a full belly none the less...

That's Antithesis as a whole...cheese is brutality (there are also people who suffer an intolerance for brutality, you see?), the cheeseburger is what you were looking for in the first place (an overwhelming album), and the regular burger is what you get (Antithesis)...so change those variables and re-write the phrase found in the first paragraph and Boom!!...there's your review.

Turns out many people is going crazy about this album..."Probably the best CD released this year"...the best? Compared to what? Aborted and Kataklysm maybe? I think if we were currently living in 2006 (when Suffocation, Cannibal Corpse and Deicide released their awesome albums) Origin would undoubtedly be the black pea in the white rice. Surely it's a good listen, but it's not what I ordered period. What Origin does is not Brutal, it's just plain Death with the fastest execution I've ever heard since the year 2000, but that's it, I didn't want to hear speedy music (that's the main reason why The Berzerker exists, am I right?) playing as fast as only hell can be is not a synonym of brutality.

Sure, it sounds good and it is very entertaining, but it lacks the only thing it promises to deliver; in my opinion that's why people is liking this so much, most people hate Brutal Death, so here comes this album wearing the BDM banner, people try it and hear something bearable...Voilá...a "great" album is born thanks to the media. It's surely fast and hostile, but it's not Brutal Death Metal.

So, in the end I can see myself enjoying this album, not for being as brutal as midget tossing, but for being good Death Metal with technical cuts and scary vokills; it's even better when you purchase this album thinking "I'm about to listen to some good ol' Death Metal" believe me. As a whole, this album is not butt ugly, the hooks will surely catch you, the moshing will surely take place, and the headbanging will be unstoppable. So, set your "hype" meter to low this time, then you'll enjoy.

Best Tracks: The Aftermath, Ubiquitous, Consuming Misery.

Defeated Sanity - Collected Demolition [2010] (Technical Brutal Death Metal)
Lable : Willowtip Records

Defeated Sanity is a German death metal band from Dachsbach, Bavaria, that was formed in 1994, originally as a side project of guitarist Wolfgang Teske and drummer Lille Gruber. Gruber is the only original remaining member left in the band, following the departure of Teske in July 2008. The other members are Christian Kühn (guitar), and Jacob Schmidt (bass guitar). For almost a year the band was looking for a new vocalist, due to Jens Staschel leaving the band shortly before Teske;Staschel replacement, A.J. Magana from Disgorge, was announced in June 2009.

Since their formation, Defeated Sanity has released two studio albums, Prelude to the Tragedy (2004), and Psalms of the Moribund (2007); both through the United Kingdom-based label Grindethic Records. Defeated Sanity also released numerous promos, demos and splits. Influenced by bands such as Cannibal Corpse and Suffocation, their music is mostly based on the American death metal style. On 2 May 2009, the band announced their signing to Willowtip Records; they will enter at Soundforge Studios in Berlin this summer to record its third full-length album, Chapters of Repugnance, for a late 2009/early 2010 release.

Defeated Sanity (Germany (Dachsbach, Bavaria) )

Defeated Sanity - Chapters of Repugnance [2010] (Technical Brutal Death Metal)
Lable : Willowtip Records

I once read an anecdote in the press about someone who had loved a certain piece of Discharge vinyl so much that they glued it to their turntable so they could never listen to anything else. My CD of Chapters of Repugnance is the first piece of musical media in about a decade that has me contemplating a similar adhesive related caper. Let's not beat about the bush, and sod objective break downs (pun unintended) of the attributes of this album, what's going to happen here is I am going to wax lyrical about what I love about this album, that enthusiasm will rub off on you, and will culminate in your purchase of Defeated Sanity's first stone cold Classic. Understood? Good.
I was dubious initially I must admit. Drummer Lille was supremely confident and wasn't shy to infer comparisons with Reign in Blood. The band's new label Willowtip has been throwing around the phrases "instant classic" and "THE. MOST. BRUTAL. RELEASE. OF. 2010." with gay abandon. When is such hyperbole justified? Rarely. Almost never. Sure, the stars seemed to align that night in the mountains of Switzerland when the band performed their first sermon of these Chapters, but would the album prove to be similarly blessed? If Chapters of Repugnance was to live up to such promise, it would have to be monumental.
The most glowing praise I can heap on Chapters is that once it's broken in, starts embedding into your brain it just feels like Classic Death Metal. I get the same feeling listening to this as I do when listening to, say, Effigy of the Forgotten, or The 10 Commandments. It captures that vibe, the vibe you get when losing yourself in a piece of Dan Seagrave artwork. I can't quite put my finger on why this is, but I'd hazard a guess that it's because of the tightness of the song structures combined with a production which is dank, raw, and as warm as fresh kill. To progress beyond Psalms of the Moribund (itself an excellent album) the band have re-purposed their early nineties influences (which were more audible on Prelude to the Tragedy) in a more prominent role. They've taken a step back in order to make a leap forward, utilising their improved song writing nous to mould themselves as an all-encompassing Death Metal act which is setting the standard for all others to follow. By all encompassing I mean that while Chapters does indeed sound and feel classic, it also has all the elements (and more) you'd expect of a Brutal Death Metal act in 2010, it has thrilling speed, drilling gravities, dizzying complexity, and sadistic breakdowns whose foreboding pauses bring a wide eyed anticipation as you foresee your imminent battering.
The improvement in Defeated Sanity's song writing is apparent in that the band are not afraid to line their compositions with hooks, percussive refrains, riffs and passages that are revisited, twisted, and developed, and of course the frequent lithe Fusion asides, which have always been a feature of the band but now seamlessly dovetail with and compliment the surrounding maelstrom. From the Considered Dead riffs of instrumental opener "Introitus", through the barbed riffing of "Engulfed in Excruciation", to the muscled up Effigy outtake of (personal favourite) "Calculated Barbarity", Defeated Sanity provide a master class in Death Metal anno 2010. The only thing the album seems to lack is an emphatic triumphant exclamation mark on which to end ala "Infected Voice" or "Orgiastic Disembowelment", to more ominous effect though closer "Lurid Assimilation" peaks early on and finishes malevolently with a riff that has "to be continued..." written all over it.
For this feels like they're just getting started, it is monumental, the band have truly hit their stride and I can't see them being knocked out of it for some time yet. For all the bands that have edged Death Metal forward over the years there's always been a threat (often fulfilled) of forgetting what it was all about in the first place, of missing the point. How does album X relate to Scream Bloody Gore, or Mental Funeral? The link is tenuous in far too many cases. Chapters of Repugnance is possessed (sic) of the very essence of Death Metal. Of Death Metal past, present, and future. All hyperbole in this case is justified. Get to know!

Decimation (Turkey (Ankara) )

Decimation - Anthems of an Empyreal Dominion [2010] (Technical Brutal Death Metal)
Lable : Comatose Music

One more death metal band from the city of Ankara, the Turkish state, namely decimation. Either have to say how again, just death metal bands on the sadistic Turkish-sadistic all! Decimation own music more toward brutal / technical death metal. So in addition to feel the brutality of their piece, also tucked a collectivity game arrangements and compositions that are very tactical. Dizziness read it? You'd better own dengarin aja deh. The theme songs are usually about the decimation and Sumerian Mythology Sumerian beliefs.
Album anthems of an Empyreal Dominion in July 2010 released yesterday. And total songs in it berjumlahkan 10 pieces. No. I need to explain in detail how the contents of the entire album. To be sure, a very formidable technical brutality of the 10 songs in this album make this album worth listening to. Do my khan, the metalheads who is on several forums outside of this album is also highly praised with positive reviews.
As a highlight of this album, I recommend a few songs. Starting from Sardonic Equilibrium Decree Humiliating Imkhullu, Peripheral Profilgacy of Transcendental Lower World, Nocturnal World, Martyring the Ethereal Patriarch, and the Gospels in the Exile of the Omnipotent.
Who are the personnel of decimation? They are in the position of vocal Volkan Ceyhan (DESPISED), Erkin Ozturk than as a lead guitarist who is also backing vocals, Emre Uren also guitarist (Raven Woods), Mert Tartac holding the bass (NETTLETHRONE, SETH.ECT) and last is that the phenomenal Goremaster menggawangi drum position (Blaster, HECATOMB, CENOTAPH, SUICIDE, WITCHTRAP). The band has stood since 1999. Up to this time have released two full length albums. Decimation is under the umbrella label Comatose Music.

Common Grave (Germany (Neunburg vorm Wald, Bavaria) )

Common Grave - Embedded Coding [2009] (Technical Brutal Death Metal)
Lable : Twilight

As heavy metal surges into the 10's, a lingering army of deathcore stragglers are attempting to leave that much-maligned tag behind by hitching their wagons to the legit DM caravan. One or two seem primed to succeed (All Shall Perish, for one), while most are likely doomed to suffer a fate reserved for posers that disown their sinking-ship identities for greener pastures. Worse yet, these strugglers are basking in relative spotlights, trying mightily to sound like something similar to Common Grave, and failing pretty damned miserably. However, it must be noted that even the genuine article can leave something to be desired.

Common Grave's attack is slightly technical, slickly modern, and sickeningly brutal. Steeped in the fuck-you-up ethos of Dying Fetus and delivered with the necksnap quirk of Benighted, Embedded Coding is a killer mini-bomb of death. After opening with a slightly-hilarious intro (surely unintentional, but nonetheless grin-inducing in its oddball juxtaposition), the band quickly launch into an agile maelstrom of up-to-the-minute bludgeoning. “Fragments Once Lost” comes off like a Beneath the Massacre / Kataklysm hybrid—and as such, kicks a significant amount of ass. And Common Grave, unlike many bands of their ilk, don’t fall blindly into the sameness trap. The halting screeks of “Casualty” contrast nicely with the semi-melodic drive of “Degradation Upgrade,” and the rollercoaster nature of tracks like “Bleeding Shades of Grey” ensures that, despite the indecipherable vocals and a wholesale lack of hooks, you’ll actually be able to tell these songs apart from one another. After repeated listens, of course.

Even after those repeated listens, though, it’s almost impossible to identify the guest vocal spots from John Gallagher and Elliot Desgagnes. Plus, the mere fact that they’ve asked these dudes to join their fray is proof that they aren’t ashamed to wear their influences like a leopard Snuggie in public. And, honestly, in spite of its impressive capacity for devastation, Embedded Coding isn’t really permanent playlist material. It’s a quick, vicious adrenaline fix that will be handy in an emergency, but it’s hard to imagine that anyone other than total brutality freaks will need to break the glass for this thing, and deathcore graduates should find a more impressive blueprint.

Blotted Science (United States of America (San Antonio, Texas))

Blotted Science - The Machinations of Dementia [2007] (Instrumental Progressive Metal)
Lable : Unsigned

This is the debut release from the instrumental metal band Blotted Science, which includes guitarist Ron Jarzombek (Watchtower), bassist Alex Webster (Cannibal Corpse) and drummer Charlie Zeleny (Behold The Arctopus). Zeleny is the third different drummer for the group, replacing prior members Chris Adler (Lamb Of God) and Derek Roddy (Hate Eternal).
The Machinations Of Dementia is a powerful, skilled and eclectic dose of instrumental metal. Jarzombek is the star of the show as he displays a nearly unlimited reservoir of riffs, styles and techniques along with a plethora of solos. Webster also really gets to show off his chops on bass, and he is an extremely talented player. Zeleny is rock solid and keeps everything right on track.
The songs on the album range from technical metal with numerous tempo and time signature changes to slower songs with a doomy vibe to songs that have thrashy grooves. To hold a listener's attention for an hour is a real trick for an instrumental group, but Blotted Science manages to do it. It's a challenging album for both the musicians and the listeners, but it's worth the effort.

Beneath the Massacre (Canada (Montreal, Quebec) )

Beneath the Massacre - Marée Noire EP [2010] (Technical Brutal Death Metal)
Lable : Prosthetic Records

I remember a band named Beneath the Massacre. Their music was just above the half way mark. One day the band decided to release an EP with 5 tracks. 5 tracks you say? Oh how can this be any better than the record known as Dystopia?

Now that I have that out of my system let’s breakdown Marée Noire, a 5 track EP that is above the half way marker…actually its better than the bands last two full lengths, Mechanics of Dysfunction and Dystopia. To be blunt about it I found Marée Noire to be rather fantastic, nice on the ears and about the perfect length from a band that didn’t make me too happy two years ago.

This EP isn’t too long either, 5 tracks clocking in a little shy of 13 minutes. The EP starts off real strong with a three minute assault, simply called The Casket You Slept In. These Canadian’s better keep that casket because it got their creative juices flowing like a mother fucker. I was impressed to hear something new and fresh to their technical death metal sound that wasn’t overly impressive a few years ago.

The only real problem I have, or maybe I should say the only real beef I have with Beneath the Massacre, has to be the 42 second intro(?) Drill Baby Drill. Is this an intro track to Designed to Strangle or is it a place holder for the half way mark on the EP? It is a pointless track and it doesn’t do anything for the EP. I would have rather seen 4 tracks or a repeat track from another album, hell maybe a b-side.

Final Verdict
Praise the Gods and the Popeye’s employee who served you that 6 piece chicken strip meal. Beneath the Massacre has put together a 5 track EP that is pretty damn good, of course minus the pointless Drill Baby Drill track. If this is what we have in store for the next full length then I know the score on that album will be delightful.

Damn good technical death metal release. There is no reason why you shouldn’t buy this album.

Hour of Penance (Italy (Rome, Lazio) )

Hour of Penance - Paradogma [2010] (Brutal Death Metal)

Lable : Unique Leader Records

This is an album that came out of nowhere for me. While I had been highly anticipating the new Cenotaph, Defeated Sanity, and Vulvectomy among others this year, Hour of Penance had always been on the fringes of my attention. It's not that I disliked them, it's just that they struck me as a semi-brutal band that was popular among a wider audience because they lessened their brutality and adopted standard modern/tech death metal tropes. I'm not saying that I was correct, or that having appeal beyond our little scene is a bad thing, it's just the impression I got. There's a lot of brutal death metal being released and I have been guilty, for better or worse, of trending towards the underground material at the expense of more widely known bands.

One listen to a Paradogma completely busted my (mostly uninformed) impression to pieces. This is most definitely a brutal death album and if it has a wide appeal it's for no other reason than the fact that it kicks ass. Now, this is a Unique Leader release so there's plenty of ostentatious technicality and a healthy dose of self-seriousness. Hour of Penance, however, manage pull it off a lot better than most of their label-mates. In many ways this reminds me of Inveracity - Extermination of Millions and Septycal Gorge - Erase the Insignificant. Paradogma is big, technical, and epic (well, as epic as you can get for a brutal death metal band), yet they remain effortlessly brutal. By that I mean that every part of the song works together and the riffs feel natural. Lesser bands sometimes write great riffs, but often they just place them next to each other, rather than making them work together.

Hour of Penance keep Paradogma running at a good pace throughout. Things get faster and slower, but not to the extremes of their slammier peers. There's plenty going on at any one time, but the technicality is kept to a reasonable level, and they know when to just go simple and be heavy. I think the clean and thick production that comes with the Unique Leader name really works wonders for that style here. Every technical buildup and every booming chug and every slithering solo is audible and backed up by a thundering rhythm section.

Now for those of you who are looking for slam and only slam, you might not like this album as much as I did. There's a lot of headbanging riffs, but they're not really slammy. If you want some well written, well produced, and dare I say epic brutal death metal, you shouldn't hesitate to pick this up. I may have been a little late to the Hour of Penance party, but Paradogma is well worth the attention.
